New Years Hike

Happy New Year!  The last supper of 2011 was Jarion's excellent steak and veggies, eaten by the light of a camp lantern on a picnic table.  We spent the last night of 2011 in a tent near the top of Mount Magazine.  It's a windy, windy place.

We were up early, in the cold.  Jarion had lost the lighter the night before, so I loaded up the early risers to obtain a replacement (and coffee) at the Lodge.  Then we drove back to camp for pancakes and eggs and sausage before loading up the dogs and the gear and driving back down the mountain.

Petit Jean Campout

This is our niece, Emma.  What a sweet face! Who wouldn't agree to a post-Christmas campout with these eyes?

Bryan's brother Kevin, his wife Julie, and their little girl had plans to camp at Petit Jean State Park over the holiday break, so we joined them.  We had short dayhikes, lazy afternoon naps in camp, and good Dutch oven food.  It was a nice break from rougher weekend trips.

North Georgia

Our friends Adam and Amy live in Georgia.  We keep in touch online but hadn't spent the weekend together since before Bryan and I were married, and before their daughter Maddie was born.  Maddie's three now, and another baby's on the way.  We decided it was time for another getaway weekend.  Since it's easier for us to travel, they chose a cabin in the north Georgia woods.

The boys worked on some minor photography projects, though since Amy spent part of the weekend feeling yucky, we didn't do the family pictures we'd been planning.  We made a few side trips to visit hiking areas and waterfalls nearby.  I think the biggest accomplishment of the weekend may have been figuring out how to drive AROUND (rather than through) the horrible tourist trap town of Helen, GA.

Predictably, all the tourist areas were mobbed with people on a three-day holiday weekend. The viewing deck at this pretty waterfall was so crammed with people we could barely get onto it.  Bryan's magical postprocessing mashup* of several exposures makes it look like a peaceful scene.

We also hiked to the top of Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia.  It was a wide, pleasant trail with a great view from the visitors' center built at the top.

We enjoyed spending a weekend in a comfy cabin in the woods catching up with Adam, Amy, and Maddie.  Thanks, friends!

Claire Bear Comes to Little Rock

It's a three-day weekend and we invited Mandy's cousin Claire, who is from rural Oklahoma, to come visit.  Mandy and I drove to Clarksville Friday night to meet Aunt Julie at Wendy's, and we brought Claire home with us.

We had a great time showing Claire around Little Rock.  She watched several bike polo games, and was a good sport about trying it herself.

Mandy's new polo bike is an old-school Specialized Rockhopper.  It's not really set up for polo yet, so after the games we drove out to Pinnacle Mountain for a quick spin around one of the beginner mountain bike trails.  Claire thought mountain biking was pretty cool.

Bryan rode his polo bike, and since the trail isn't very hilly he wasn't much bothered by having only one gear.  Mandy was on her offroad unicycle.  Somehow, at dusk, she managed to get lost by herself on the trail.  We split up to look for her, and she was found without incident.

Later, despite the chilly day and the threat of rain, we hiked up Pinnacle Mountain.  Claire confided that, actually, she'd never been hiking before.  She was a little nervous about climbing the rather steep, exposed 'spine', just before the top, but Mandy talked her through it.  It's fun to watch people stretch their boundaries and try new things.

I think Claire pushed back a lot of her boundaries over the weekend.  We went out for regular American kid pizza one night, but another night we had supper at a good Middle Eastern place.  We shared everything across the table, so Claire got to try lots of new spices.  She likes hummus but not baba ghannouj.  She wasn't wild about the taziki sauce, but thought the spicy fish was yummy.

And she said she walked more during her visit than she'd ever walked before in her life.

As a special surprise, I'd made arrangements with our friends Britt and Debbie to take Claire on a behind-the-gates trip to the zoo.  The first order of business on Monday morning was to go for a walk with Mary and Ellen, the zoo's two elephants.

The Little Rock zoo is one of only a small handful of zoos in the country who let their elephants walk around the whole zoo every morning before it opens to the public.  It's good exercise for the animals physically, and it's an interesting part of their lives.  And it gives kids like Claire and Mandy an occasional opportunity to do something really, really cool.

When we'd finished with our walk, we got to visit the big cats.  The weather was icky outside so most of them were still in their 'dens' and we got to say hello.  Since lions are Claire's favorite thing, this was a big deal - she even got to touch one of the lions' fur through the cage.  She loved having Debbie there to answer questions.  She'd always wondered if big cats purr, and know she knows the answer.

We got to see the bears, too.  We had to be quiet in the 'bear house' because the grizzlies are hibernating.  But Claire and Mandy fed the otters and sun bears.  Thor, the big male sloth bear, was his usual charming self, sucking cheerios off our hands and through his door.  Sasha, the other sloth bear, was less agreeable.  When she saw Mandy, she backed up and rushed the door, slamming against it and flinging spit all over Mandy's jacket.  When we walked by again, she did the same thing.  Apparently Sasha doesn't like plaid hats.

Before taking Claire back to meet up with her mom again, we stopped by the Big Dam Bridge for a walk across, and to just sit and look out at the water for awhile.  We so enjoyed having Claire nearby for a few days.

Goals for 2010, Goals for 2011

We don't really do New Years' Resolutions at our house - we're just as likely to begin an exercise program in March, or set goals to be more organized in August, or try to eat better in October.

One thing we have been doing, though, is to set some specific goals for biking and hiking and 'bag nights' - nights spent in sleeping bags - for each year.  This means that these goals are specific numbers to work toward rather than a soft idea (camp and ride more).

You can click on the graphic below to see how we did in 2010.  Go ahead, your eyes aren't good enough to read that tiny print.

Colorado Vacation: Part 4 - We Play Tourist in Grand Lake

This is a multi-part trip report.  If you haven't already, you should start with Part 1. Remember that you can click on any of the photos to see larger versions of them.

Back in Grand Lake, we checked out a few places before settling on the Lone Eagle Lodge, a motel-style park-in-front with hanging baskets of purple petunias.  We got a two-bedroom 'room' right next to a deck with a grill and a hot tub.  Supper at the Sagebrush Cafe - big cheeseburgers and trout and onion rings and local spinach - was yummy.

In the morning, Bryan and I spread out the map on the motel bed and revised our plans, replacing the failed loop trip with a couple of days' dayhikes.  We planned routes above treeline for Mandy, but with easy ways for Bryan to bail out if he felt worse again.  We packed slowly, letting our tents and sleeping bags dry in the sunshine outside our room, and re-sorting the laundry and the gear and the food.  I always feel better when things are put away.

Hike Little Rock

On the day I picked Mandy up from ecology camp, I got to meet Inge, her favorite other camper. Mandy said that Inge is from Little Rock, so I said hello to Inge's mom and got her email address. We made some arrangements earlier this week, and picked up Inge for a hike along the River Trail near Burns Park. We walked up the Emerald Park trail to the knife-edge bluff overlooking the river, then across the back of the old quarry, past the backyard of the VA hospital, and down to the River Trail again.

After our hike, we drove downtown for a little unicycle practice near the Clinton Library. Mandy was pleased to show off a little for her friend, and her friend was suitably impressed.

We all enjoyed Inge's company. She's smart and silly and unselfconscious in a way that most twelve-year-old girls aren't. We called her mom to ask permission to keep her for awhile longer, and Bryan and I took the girls to the Purple Cow, a local hamburger place, for supper and milkshakes. After dark, we drove the girls out to Pinnacle Mountain for a 'star party'. The local astronomy club sets up in the parking lot there, sometimes, to let people who don't have telescopes come out and enjoy looking at things. We saw Saturn and Venus, and the Dumbbell and Ring nebulas, and we still had Inge home right on time.
